Homecoming
for Shield
A
large gathering of Ards supporters joined with former players
on Monday night to remember the 1994 County Antrim Shield win.
Fans
were treated to a showing of the classic match in the Sports
Club, attended by six former players from the era, as well as
a trio of backroom staff.
Interest
in the event was high, with over 50 supporters present, eager
to relive the 4-2 victory over Crusaders. In attendance was
match winner David Stranney, who scored two goals that evening
at the Oval, as well as former international goalkeeper Paul
Kee.
The
star attraction of the night though was the magnificent trophy
itself, kindly on loan from Cliftonville FC. One of the most
impressive trophies in Irish League football, the County
Antrim Senior Shield dates back to the late 1880s. Ards had
captured it twice before the 1994 win - in 1955/56 and
1971/72.

Event
organiser Adrian Monaghan was delighted to have the support of
so many former stars and was keen to acknowledge the help of
former team attendant John Wilton in arranging the night.
Manager
from the time, Roy Coyle, was unfortunately on holiday, though
his assistant Jimmy Brown was able to make the event, as was
one-time caretaker-manager George Bowden.

All
agreed that the reunion was a super night, with most
witnessing the highlights of the game for the first time in 15
years.
