Fans Reminisce With Past Duo

There were a couple of very interested spectators at the Ards game in Limavady on Saturday, two nineties playing legends in fact.

The lucky handful of Ards fans who made the trek north at the weekend were able to enjoy a pre-match drink with none other than Harry McCourt and Marty McCann.

The special visit had been arranged some weeks ago by Harry, who is an occasional user on the TALKardsfc forum, and he convinced his mate Marty to come along to the nearby Showgrounds to take in the game and meet up with some old followers. That set up quite an interesting afternoon for a few fans, who looked upon those players as their childhood heroes.

Harry and 'the main man'

There were a few stories to be told and some forgotten memories revived also as the players and fans reminisced in the Limavady social club. A fair bit of talk of course revolved around the County Antrim Shield win of 1994 and the League Cup success a year later, with Marty being informed, to his surprise, that he had in fact missed a spot kick that night. It didn't take long for the memory to return though!

Harry, who enjoyed two spells with the club, is probably best remembered for his late goal in the 1993 Irish Cup final, which would have given Ards the trophy but for an even later Bangor equaliser. He was also the man who put Ards through to the final thanks to a late goal against Cliftonville in the semis, a goal which he played another significant part in.

Fans may remember an awful moment in the Cliftonville defence prior to that goal, but only a man on the ground could have revealed this little fact. A miscue from a Reds defender laid the ball onto Paul Rice in goal, when enter the lurking McCourt to whisper to the keeper, 'Paul, you can't lift that'. Doubt was entered into Rice's mind, the ball spun lose and hero Harry was on hand to roll it into the net! The rest, I suppose is history.

the guys and the fans

A super day for all those fans who got to enjoy a chat with the lads, and a splendid gesture from the men themselves. Although there was no Ards victory, it was probably best for the two guys as they had in fact travelled to the game with United player Austin Friel.
