A visit from local MLA Jim Shannon to a recent Bring Ards FC Home campaign meeting did much to encourage supporters.
The
member for Strangford, who is also a member of Ards Borough
Council responded to an invitation to address a gathering of
over 50 Ards followers.
At the meeting, Shannon praised the actions of those involved in the Bring Ards FC Home idea and said that it had done much to put the issue of a community stadium for the town front and centre.
The councillor commented, "The action campaign by the Ards supporters has captivated many. People who haven’t been to a match in years are talking about Ards again. Ards FC is at the centre of the community and can be an anchor tenant in a community stadium."
Supporters present were keen to hear from him also about the willingness among the other councillors to provide such a facility, and he told them: "I believe there is a willingness within Ards Borough Council to support Ards FC. A community stadium is the key, incorporating other clubs and sports. The council has applied for funding to upgrade Londonderry Park but if that’s not successful, there is still a commitment to build this facility."
Shannon continued, "I was at the recent Steel & Sons Cup final on Christmas morning and it’s been proven that Ards can deliver on the pitch, now it’s time for the council to deliver off it. I look forward to the day when we can bring Ards Football Club back to Newtownards."
Supporters involved in the campaign also met with Shannon's DUP colleague Simon Hamilton in recent days. During a very positive meeting, the Ards supporters were encouraged to hear the councillor give his qualified support to the scheme.
