Win for Patton's in fans' tournament
1st July 2008

Warren Patton Bakeries were the inaugural winners of the Ards Supporters Challenge Cup on Saturday, fending off the seven other competing teams at West Winds Playing Fields.

In what was an excellent day for the club, over 100 players and spectators enjoyed the first 6-a-side tournament run by the Premier Ards Supporters' Club. Two groups of four teams were keenly fought out to decide who would progress to the cup semi-finals.

In group A, United Ards and Lough 'n' Friends made it through, while the clear winners from Group B were Pattons and the Whiskey Railers. All was not lost though for the remaining four teams, as they dropped into the supplemental plate competition, ensuring five games for every team competing.

The Ballyclare Supporters team eventually took that prize, beating off the Premier Supporters side 3-1 in the final. Wooden spoon 'winners' were Atletico Adelaide, who lost their last game to Ards Young Men.

Onto the big stage and the Whiskey Railers put away Lough 'n' Friends in semi-final one, while United Ards fell to Pattons. That meant two sides from Group B through to the final, with the game poised at 1-1 for some time. Alas a breakaway move saw a second goal for Pattons and they were on hand to collect the trophy at the presentation ceremony back at the social club.

That rounded off an excellent day, one that is sure to be repeated, and thanks must go to Timmy Clarke of T.C. Plumbing for sponsoring the trophy. The Premier Ards S.C. also appreciated the help of Brian Adams and all our volunteer referees as well as Gerald Irvine of the Ards Borough Youth League who provided the goalposts.
