After a great three points at the Brandywell on Saturday which saw Ards move off the foot of the table on goal difference, Dungannon visited the Bangor Fuels Arena in this last home game of the scheduled league programme.
With Ards fans keeping a close eye on the Newry versus Institute game, it didn’t take long for Ards to open the scoring. In the eighth minute a lovely ball from Gareth Tommons was met by a volley by Michael McLellan which found the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Eamon McAllister’s volley from range was then well saved by Dungannon 'keeper Evan Moran, before the Swifts came close in the twentieth minute when Rhyss Campbell’s header from a corner was saved by Sam Johnston.
Campbell was in action again in the twenty sixty minute when his volley from outside the box was also saved by Johnston. In the thirty sixth minute McLellan‘s well timed pass found Tommons but he unselfishly passed to Josh Kelly whose strike was off target.
In first half additional time Campbell’s strike made Johnston produce a terrific save to keep the game 1-0 going into the break.
Dungannon dominated the start of the second half with multiple chances to equalise. In the sixty fourth minute Michael Carvill’s powerful header trickled wide, while a scramble after a Carvill freekick made substitute Mark Kelly make a crucial clearance in the seventy third minute.
The Swifts continued to push and came close when dangerous Ben Gallagher’s strike from range made Sam Johnston produce another fine save. In additional time Swifts substitute Jarlath O’Rourke’s strike from just inside the box was over the bar to the relief of the Red and Blue Army, with the game ending 1-0 shortly afterwards.
A massive three points for Ards proved even more important with Newry losing 2-1. Ards go into the final game of the season three points clear of Newry with a superior goal difference of four goals.
