Ards Knockout Breda on Boxing Day

Ards came into the game after two convincing 3-0 victories against Dundela and Loughgall. This week’s opponents Knockbreda were bottom of the table on goal difference but had shown improved form recently including a win against Ards at the end of November.

It didn’t take Ards long to open the scoring as, in the 3rd minute, Eamon McAllister’s ball found Kym Nelson whose effort from close range found the back of the net. 0-1!

On 11 minutes Michael McLellan’s strong shot from outside the box was just over the bar, before Gary Lavery’s strike was just off target as the home side looked for a leveller. 20 minutes in and David McAllister’s effort from 30 yards was denied by Knockbreda stopper Jack Hazard.

During a busy couple of minutes Gary Lavery had his chance saved, with the rebound falling to familiar face Brendan Bennett who also failed to beat keeper Neeson, From the breakaway Ards raced up the pitch and Craig McMillen’s strong strike came off the left hand post .

However Ards didn’t have to wait long for their second as, in the 33rd minute, lovely work from Eamon McAllister was followed up by Craig McMillen’s strike which found the bottom corner. 0-2!

Approaching the half way mark McLellan’s volley was saved by the Hazard to deny Ards a third before the break.

Almost immediatley in the 2nd half the away side got their third when skilful play from David McAllister gave his brother Eamon a great opportunity, with his shot from close range finding the back of the net, 0-3!

With just over half an hour to play Ards got another when a great pass from McMillen found McLellan and from inside the box he whipped the ball across Hazard and found the bottom right corner to make it 0-4.

Nine minutes later Ards scored their fifth of the game when David McAllister’s left footed first time strike found Hazard picking the ball out of the net yet again..

Then Knockbreda substitute Brandon Short had his powerful strike stopped by Brian Neeson in the 78th minute.

A minute later David McAllister got his second, and Ards’ sixth from inside the box and within a minute Nelson joined McAllister on 2 goals when his shot found the bottom right corner. 0-7!

Ards scored their eighth and final goal of the game with one minute to go when they were awarded a freekick. David McAllister took it with his attempt finding the far corner, 0-8 in some style!

The game ended seconds later with the away team’s convincing victory taking all three points.

Goals galore for Ards who were clinical  in front of goal and now lie fourth in the table, five points behind third placed Loughgall with a game in hand. Ards have a break from league action as their next game is against Carrick Rangers in the New Year on the 4th of January in the Irish Cup.
