Ards welcomed SBYL Division one leaders Berlin Swifts to Londonderry Park in the 2nd round of the NIBFA Cup. Ards hoping to build on a positive result and performance from last week.
The first two minutes proved to be action packed, Swifts forward forcing Smyth into a good save. Ards then broke and won a corner, which Hollywood crossed for the unmarked Bickerstaff to head home.
Ards continued with most of the possession but largely only creating half chances. The best opportunity falling to Shearer but the Swifts keeper dived at his feet well.
Despite Ards' dominance of the ball, Berlin Swifts worked tirelessly of the ball and soon got their reward. A stray pass along the back-line allowed the Swifts in to equalise.
That would be the way the half would end. Ards being urged to have more intensity in their play.
The second half was largely uneventful. The Swifts keeper making a few good saves and Ards not hitting the target. Two chances in quick succession saw Shearer force a good save but Munn missing the ta
rget from the follow up.
Swifts created their own chance, a cross into the box with the forward not getting the required connection to score. Ards had time to make one more opportunity, Shearer rounding the keeper but the heavy touch forcing him to wide to convert.
The full time whistle went and the first period of extra time begun.
Ards took the lead half way
through the first period. Munn being put through and beating the goalkeeper to the ball to convert.
Ards then gave away a penalty before the end of the first period, which levelled the scores. Ards had time to win their own penalty Shearer being fouled in the box. Munn converted, the Swifts keeper getting a hand to it but the power seemed to beat him.
The second period began with Ards adding a fourth , Munn completing his hat trick. Ards se
eming to find a bit more space.
Munn then converting a blocked shot on the half volley into the far corner. There was still time for Bickerstaff to add his second, after Munn headed back across goal.
The whistle went and Ards are through to the last 16. Ards weren't at their best but came good towards end of extra time. Credit to Berlin Swifts who worked tirelessly throughout the game. Ards wish them all the best for the season.
