Ards U18s 2 V 1 Linfield U18s

Our Under 18s picked up their first 3 points of the season on Friday evening defeating Linfield 2-1 at Holywood 3G.

Ards took the lead on the 36th minute mark as John Joe MacDonald who found joy down the left hand side in first half beat the fullback before his shot looped over the Linfield keeper to make it 1-0. A first half with limited chances, Linfield had a chance to equalise but were denied by the feet of goalkeeper Jamie Moody.

Ards 1-0 Linfield

Into the second half and Linfield put pressure on in the early stages. Ards felt hard done by as Karl Holywood was put through on goal and looked to be tripped by a Linfield defender but the referee didn’t award the free kick as Linfield went up the other end and scored to make it 1-1. Holywood had the ball in the net shortly after but the referee ruled it out for an earlier foul from the forward. Ards managed to grab a deserved winner, a superb set piece delivery from Nathan Johnston was guided into the net by Jonny Murray making it 2-1. Despite a late onslaught from Linfield, Ards defended extremely well and saw the game out.

Managers Words “Over the moon with the result given it’s our first win of the season. We were disappointed not to win last week having been in front on 3 occasions, we took that into training this week and worked on how to improve it. To their credit it paid off, I can’t recall our keeper having many saves to make but he along with our defence stood tall and dealt with any balls that came their way. Hopefully that result now will spur the players on in future games. They have a great work ethic in training and willingness to learn and improve”
