Ards U18s Sweep aside Newry

Our Under 18s progressed into the quarter finals of the Harry Cavan Cup following an impressive 5-0 victory over Newry City on Friday evening at Kilcluney. The same venue were both sides met back in September, with Newry claiming a 3-1 win that day.

Ards took the lead on Friday after 15 minutes, Karl Martins set piece delivery was finished off by Karl Hollywood who is in fine form as of late. They came close shortly after when full back Emmett McGirr went on a dazzling run only to have his shot saved by the Newry keeper. The home side finished the half strong however but keeper Harry Kinnear along with his defence done well to prevent Newry from grabbing an equaliser.

Half Time

Newry City 0-1 Ards

Following a half time chat the players were asked to raise their game in the second period and show a bit more calmness on the ball and more desire to win it back, that came in abundance. Just 5 minutes after the restart James Watson grabbed his first for the club, a scintillating run from John Joe MacDonald down the left hand side, he lifted his head up and picked out Watson arriving late who curled a lovely left footed strike into the top left hand corner to make it 2-0. Ards grew in confidence from that goal and as the game stretched with Newry searching for a way back into the match Watson grabbed his second, a short corner to Martin his shot was parried, but the rebound was finished off.  An Ards side hit with injuries and illness following an ongoing bug didn’t look for any excuses on the evening, each to a man all players contributed and gave every ounce, Karl Hollywood was still searching for goals and he made it 4-0 latching onto the end of a superb MacDonald delivery. It was the number 9s fifth goal however that put the icing on the cake, individual piece of brilliance and calmness shown as he made his way into the box and beat a number of Newry players before drilling it past the keeper to make it 5-0 at full time.

Managers Words “Great to progress into the next round of the cup, at 7pm on Friday evening id have never believed that we’d have won 5-0. Following the journey down the road, the players looked flat in the changing room, some of the boys weren’t feeling great but they deserve all the praise in the world. They gave everything they had on the night, worked their socks off against a Newry side that play some lovely football and have great intelligent players. The scoreline might seem harsh on them as at 1-0 we warned the boys at half time that if they continued to let Newry play in the second half we could very well lose. They took it on board and when our second goal went in they took over and dominated the remainder of the match. Missing from the squad was Marc McCann who had been vital for us in recent weeks, Karl Martin went in their and put in a well disciplined performance. There were standouts all over the pitch but Emmett McGirr looked back to his old self following a niggly back injury that’s halted him for a number of weeks. Karl Hollywood grabbed his 15th goal in 5 games, his second half performance particularly was up there with his best this season, great hold up and link up play that started moves for the other goals, getting into the box and showing a piece of individual quality for his own. Very pleased with how things are going, the players are honest, they’ve a great team spirit, they show hunger, they want to learn, and importantly they play with a smile on their face. What more can we ask of them”
