Ards v Dergview Preview

Lough 41 Championship.

Ards vs Dergview.

Clandeboye Park.

Saturday 1st October at 3.00 p.m.

Ards will be hoping to build on the morale boosting three points gained last time out against Dundela when they take on bottom of the table Dergview at Clandeboye this weekend. It was not just the win over Dundela but also the performance that must have pleased the fans and the manager, the team worked hard throughout and played some decent football to deservedly overcome a side that were in good form near the top of the table.

In spite of that win Ards find themselves in eighth place in the table due to some inconsistent performances so far this season. However, without being complacent, fans will be expecting back-to-back home wins as they take on bottom side Dergview. It has been a difficult season so far for Dergview, they sit in twelfth place with a single point, earned in a 0-0 draw at Ballinamallard and have only scored three goals all season, the lowest total in the Championship. Although two of those goals were scored in the narrow 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Knockbreda last time out, their only other goal was scored in the opening game of the season. They also have the worst defensive record in the division in terms of goals conceded with 17 so far, Ards are not much better having conceded 14.

Tommy Canning has been in charge of Dergview for approximately 18 months and while he did see his side win their first senior trophy when they lifted the North West Cup against Limavady United a year ago, it is fair to say he hasn't found it easy. He has a side which is a blend of youth and experience, all three goals this season have been scored by players on the wrong side of thirty, so he will be hoping to find the right combination that will enable his side to get out of the relegation zone. Ards fans will be hoping that process starts next week.

Matthew Tipton will be unlikely to make many changes from the starting line up that performed so well against Dundela, with a couple of away games coming up after this one, he will be hoping for another three points and a kick start to the hoped for promotion challenge.
