Lough 41 Championship.

Ards vs Newington.

Clandeboye Park.

Tuesday November 8th at 7.45 p.m.

Following on quickly from the impressive display on Saturday when they beat Ballinamallard United 2-0, Ards will look to extend their run of consecutive home victories to six games when they take on newly promoted Newington for the first time this season. Newington won the Premier Intermediate League by a big margin last season and clinched the Steel and Sons cup as well. Only founded in 1979, this is their first season at this level.

A glance at the league table shows Newington in ninth place with just eleven points and having only picked up one win in the last five, however they have two games in hand over most teams and should they win those and get three points against Ards they would only be one point behind the Red and Blues. That might seem unlikely for a team that has just one win in five, but they have only lost to the current top two Dundela and Loughgall by a single goal, so on their day can trouble anyone.

There are a few faces with previous links to Ards in the Newington squad such as Fra Brennan and Kevin Bradley, but the one most Ards fans will remember is Gary Warwick who has found form with Newington having scored 21 in 35 games since he joined. Gary actually played for Ards when they met Newington in a competitive fixture for the first time in 2014, setting up the opening goal for Neil Dougan in a 2-0 win in the County Antrim Shield. Warwick and Darren Stuart provide the main goal threat, Stuart has scored seven times this season and is the current top scorer.

This game presents Ards with an opportunity to cement their place in the top half of the table and with the top two playing each other at Wilgar Park, there is also a chance to make up some ground on other promotion contenders. Should Ards manage to pick up the points at Newington's expense and Ballinamallard get a result at Warrenpoint, Ards would move up to fourth in the table.

Without the competition from televised EPL or European fixtures hopefully fans will turn out in good numbers to support Matthew Tipton and the team.
