Ards v Queens -County Antrim Shield R1 Preview

Updated: Sep 6, 2022 County Antrim Senior Shield.

Ards vs Queen's University.

Wednesday 7th September at 8.00 p.m.

Ards complete the first round of the County Antrim Shield when they host Queen's University on Wednesday night. The other ties will be/were [delete as appropriate depending on when you read this] contested on Tuesday and as Bangor had a home tie against Cliftonville the Ards game was moved to Wednesday evening. Both teams will be hoping to join Tuesday's successful sides in the second round scheduled for October 11th.

Queen's were of course relegated to the Lough 41 Premier Intermediate League at the end of last season, an outcome that was confirmed when Ards won 3-2 at the Dub in the last game of the season, so if needed they have an added incentive to progress at the expense of Ards.

The students have made a respectable start in their new surroundings, opening the league season with a 1-1 draw at Tobermore United and following up with a 2-1 home win over Lisburn Distillery. Due to the plethora of cup competitions those are the only two league games they have completed so far. There have been several changes to their squad since the end of the last campaign but one face familiar to Ards is attacking midfielder Marc McKenna who has started both league games so far.

While Ards will be looking for a morale boosting win after the disappointing reverse at Warrenpoint last weekend, Matthew Tipton will no doubt be considering an important League game against newcomers Newington on Saturday, so with a couple of players definitely out injured and a couple in the doubtful category he may give game time to some of those who haven't featured much so far. Ards fans will be hoping that new signing Adam Salley will make his home debut, having made a good impression on Saturday, setting up the opening goal of the game for Eamon Scannell.

Should the game be drawn after 90 minutes there will be no extra time, the outcome will be decided by kicks from the penalty mark.

Season tickets are not valid for this game and admission prices are set at Championship level, namely £8 and £5 for concessions.
