Glentoran 4 - Ards 0
After a great result last weekend but a disappointing performance on Tuesday, Ards looked to bounce back during this trip to The Oval. Three changes from Tuesday’s starting eleven saw Johnny Taylor being replaced by Adam McAleenan, Jonny Frazer replacing Jonah Mitchell and David Elebert taking the place of Michael Kerr.
From the outset Glentoran pressured the Ards back five with John Herron’s free header being wide of the right post in the third minute. Glentoran broke the deadlock in the eleventh minute when Curtis Allen was able to take advantage of a miscommunication between David Elebert and Sam Johnston. 1-0 with this goal being Allen’s one hundredth for the Glens. In the thirteenth minute injured David Elebert was replaced by Michael Kerr.
In the twenty second minute Jonny Frazer unselfishly passed to Gareth Tommons but his shot was wide of the right hand post. John Herron’s header then struck off the bar in the twenty sixth minute as Glentoran looked to double their lead. In the twenty eighth minute Frazer’s ball to Josh Kelly saw his shot from the edge of the box fly off target.
Glentoran got their second goal in the forty third minute when Ross Redman’s cross to Robbie McDaid saw his shot find the back of the net. The half ended 2-0.
Substitute Michael McLellan’s shot from the edge of the box was wide of the right post in the fifty second minute, and McLellan was in action again when his weak one on one shot was blocked by Elliott Morris.
Shortly after, in the sixty first minute, Glentoran got their third when captain Marcus Kane’s close range volley found the back of the net to make it 3-0.
Dylan Davidson’s shot from the edge of the box was then saved by Johnston, but the Ards keeper couldn’t stop Allen’s shot in the seventy fourth minute which made it 4-0.
In the last five minutes David McAllister’s shot from outside the box flew over the bar, before Glentoran substitute John McGuigan was sent off for a head butting offence. The game ended 4-0.
A disappointing result for Ards as they suffer their first thrashing of the season. The Red and Blues will look to bounce back from two consecutive defeats this Saturday with the visit of Dungannon Swifts to the Bangor Fuels Arena.
