King Arthurs Trumps Queen's

Ross Arthurs came of the bench on Wednesday evening to grab two goals and a man of the match award to help kill of Queen's in the first round of the County Antrim Shield after they had led 2-0 with little over 30 minutes remaining .

The first half was largely forgettable for a much changed Ards side with Matthew Tipton leaving out several players with this Saturday's visit of Newington in mind . From the very first whistle Queen's looked assured and organised with a sense of purpose that Ards couldn't match for long periods and after only 4 minutes confusion at the back let in McIlroy who headed the ball over the advancing Craughwell .

Barely a minute later McIlroy again had an effort from the edge of the box which was straight at the keeper who failed to collect cleanly but thankfully for him Calderwood was on hand to clear the ball for a corner. Queen's continued to threaten the home team moving through the lines with ease at times and it wasn't until around 25 minutes that Ards had their first real sight of goal however Jallow couldn't direct his header goalwards.

there was a long delay soon after as McGivern in the Ards defence went to ground feeling unwell and after some checks was replaced by Greg Hall .

Ards improved slightly after this and Reynolds was thwarted on a few occasions by the Queen's keeper whilst Hunter was unfortunate not to have hit the target after good build up play.

HT 1-0

Ards started much better in the 2nd half getting in behind more and more often but just could not finish the promising moves with one in particular seeing 4 attempts on goal in the space of 10 seconds. It looked like the hosts would rue those chances as Queen's went 2 up with the unmarked Middleton heading in at the back post but it wasn't long before Ards were given a life line when Reynolds was bundled over as he attempted to bring down the ball to shoot and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty and dishing out a red card .

Adam Salley made no mistake smashing home the spot kick for his first goal in red and blue and for the remainder of the game it was all Ards .

Queen's just couldn't cope playing with the 10 men and Reynolds made them pay when he latched on to a ball coming in from the right and absolutely smashed the ball home from a tight angle . A superb finish that really killed the away sides resolve .

Various substitutions followed with Ross Arthurs being one of them and he wasted no time heading Ards into the lead after Callum McVeigh sent in a great cross .

The 4th goal arrived a short time later with Arthurs again as he was given time to bring the ball down and volley Ards into a 2 goal lead much to the appreciation of the home support .

Ards easily seen out the remainder to progress to the Quarter finals and can now switch attentions to Saturday's league encounter with Newington .
