Limavady 4 v 2 Ards

A much changed Ards side faced Limavady who were relegated from the Championship last year.

In the opening minutes of the game the home side opened the scoring when Sean McCarron scored following a corner to make it 1-0.

Then in the fourteenth minute McCarron got his second when he lobbed the ball over the keeper to make it 2-0.

The away side looked like they’d got a goal back when Kym Nelson beat the keeper, however, the goal was ruled out for hand ball. Then Eamon McAllister’s strike from the edge of the box curled wide of the left hand post as Ards looked to get one back.

Not long after Ards did get the goal they desired when a corner from McConnell was headed in by Nelson to make it 2-1 in the thirty ninth minute. The half ended 2-1.

McConnell was in action again when his freekick was denied by the cross bar in the fiftieth minute. Then McCarron’s volley was denied by Ards keeper Darren Fox as the striker looked for his hat trick.

It was Ards who scored next to equalise when Eamon McAllister’s corner was headed on by Nelson to give him his second of the night.

Lovely play from Eamon McAllister couldn’t be taken advantage of in the fifty ninth minute by Stephen Wilson as his close range effort could only find the side netting.

However it was the home side who took the lead in the sixty sixth minute when, after a scramble in the box, the referee ruled that the ball had crossed the line with Dean Brown taking the credit.

In the seventy ninth minute, after confusion in the Ards defence, Ryan Lowe missed an empty net to the shock of the home fans.

However Lowe did get a goal and the last of the game when he lobbed the ball over the Ards stopper to make it 4-2.

The game ended 4-2 meaning Ards are no longer in the League Cup. Attentions turn to the crucial league game on Friday night at the Bangor Fuels Arena against Portadown.
