Match Day 2 Ards v H&W Welders

Updated: Oct 13, 2019

Ards vs Harland and Wolff Welders.

Bluefin Sport Championship.

Bangor Fuels Arena.

Tuesday 6th August at 7.45 p.m.

Ards first home game of the season is against old foes Harland and Wolff Welders. During our Championship years fixtures between the two sides, whether in League or cup, were invariably close affairs and given that both teams had good wins in their opening fixtures this encounter is likely to be a test. Both sides got their League campaigns off to impressive starts with Ards earning a 4-0 win away to PSNI in front of a healthy travelling support, while the Welders had an excellent 2-0 win over Newry City who like Ards were relegated from the Premiership last season and are among the favourites to gain promotion this season. The Welders were by all accounts good value for their win and should have been safe long before the second goal was scored by ex-Ards favourite Ross Arthurs.

The Welders have other players with a connection to the Red and Blues, including Scott Davidson and Johnathan Smith, who played in three games for Ards last season while on loan from Linfield. Ards for their part gave competitive debuts to William Armstrong and Scott McMillan against PSNI, both players having left the Welders for Ards during the close season. Michael McLellan will also be facing one of his old clubs and will be hoping to add to the brace he scored on Saturday.

Warren Feeney will probably field a squad similar to Saturday's, Jerry Thompson and Jonah Heron are still injured but it is hoped that Craig McMillen, who had an excellent game on Saturday will be fit to play. Craig had to go off with an ankle injury following a robust challenge that earned the PSNI defender a deserved yellow card. One possible addition to the squad is Dylan Wilson, who was signed from PSNI on Saturday and has played alongside Armstrong and McMillan at Northern Ireland Junior International level. Dylan who is 20 and comes from Comber is an attack minded midfielder and has also played for Knockbreda.
