Match Preview - Ards v Glentoran County Antrim Shield.

Ards F.C vs Glentoran.

Clandeboye Park.

Tuesday 10th October at 7.45 p.m.

Ards welcome Glentoran in this second round County Antrim Shield game as both teams bid for a place in the semi-finals. The two teams met at the same stage of this competition and at the same venue nearly a year ago, in fact it was the 11th of October last year when the Glens ran out comfortable winners by a 4-1 scoreline. Glentoran might look on this game as a welcome distraction from their league campaign where they have lost the last three games and now sit eleven points behind Linfield who beat them 2-0 last Friday night. In fact their only win in the last five games came last Tuesday with a 2-0 home victory over PIL side Dollingstown in the BetMcClean League Cup, when 15 year old George Feeney, son of manager Warren scored one of the goals. Warren Feeney was of course the manager at Ards from February to November 2019 before managing Pirin Blagoevgrad in Bulgaria for a couple of years, he then had a spell at Welling United before taking over the Oval hot seat in June this year.

Although plagued by injuries the Glens with key players including Rhys Marshall, the Donnelly brothers and Luke McCullough all missing recently, have a big squad and against Linfield included ex International Niall McGinn, close season signing from Larne Fuad Sule and big money recruit Shay McCartan . even if they might rest players to concentrate on improving their league position they will present a stiff challenge for an Ards side who, although on a run of only one defeat in the last ten games in all competitions are still to really hit top form. There have been some encouraging signs in recent games and the battling performance at Ballinamallard last time out when they were denied a penalty near the end but battled on and got a deserved equaliser, was a good indication of the determination and team spirit within the squad.

Ards will have their own injury worries, Patrick Cafolla was again missing on Saturday as he recovers from a hamstring problem, George Tipton sustained an injury early on against Ballinamallard but battled on until he eventually had to be replaced, while Michael Ruddy was on the bench on Saturday after picking up a knock against Portadown, although he was able to get a few minutes under his belt as a late substitute. Jamal Dupree has of course left the club and is no longer available. Ards have a quick turnaround after this game as Institute are the visitors on Friday night in another league fixture. Will Matthew Tipton put out his strongest side in the hope of achieving what would be a surprise result, or will he be pragmatic and concentrate on the league. The quickest way to find out is to be there!

Please note that admission prices for this fixture are £10 full price and £7 for concessions, under 16s free with a paying adult. These prices have been agreed after consultation between the two clubs, season tickets are not valid for this game. If the scores are still level after normal time is over there will be no extra time, the taking of penalty kicks will decide the winner.
