PSNI 0 - Ards 4

The start of a new season saw Ards make the trip to the Dub to face PSNI. Johnny Taylor captained the team out with Neeson, McMillan, Armstrong, McGovern and Murray all making their league debuts for Ards in the starting 11.

The first chance of the game fell to Ards when Johnny Taylor’s header from an Armstrong pass was well saved by the keeper. Then seconds later returnee Michael McLellan’s freekick from thirty yards out was also denied by the PSNI stopper.

Ards kept up the pressure and nearly broke the deadlock in the twenty second minute when TJ Murray’s header from a David McAllister corner was on target, but once again the PSNI keeper was able to deny Ards the goal.

Then, in the thirtieth minute PSNI’s Shawn Green’s close range effort made Ards stopper Brian Neeson produce a fine save to keep it goalless.

However in the thirty seventh minute the deadlock was broken when David McAllister’s ball was knocked in by McLellan. The half ended 0-1 with the away side having more chances.

In the fiftieth minute Ards doubled their lead when lovely work from David McAllister saw him weave through the PSNI defence and get himself in a goal scoring position with his deflected strike finding the back of the net. 0-2 to Ards.

Nine minutes later Ards got another when a quick break and great pass from Craig McMillen gave T.J. Murray a chance which he converted to make it 0-3.

McLellan thought he’d got Ards fourth in the seventy fourth minute but his close range strike was ruled out for offside. However he did complete the scoring when his free kick was initially cleared but found him again, with his header beating the PSNI stopper and making it 4-0 in the final minute of play.

A convincing victory for Ards sees them top the table after the first round of fixtures of the 2019/20 season. Next up is the Welders at 7.45 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the Bangor Fuels Arena.
