George Best Cup Day 2
It was a proud day for Ards Football Club we finished runners up in their category. This was the first time that Ards have competed in the George Best Cup.
Ards finished joint second in their group, losing one game and drawing their other two. This qualified Ards for a quarter final tie against Linfield B. Ards had enjoyed many close games against Linfield in this season's Championship, but a victory against The Blues had been elusive. This time, however, Ards secured an extra time winner to progress to the semi-final stage.
Ards drew their semi-final 0-0 against English side Leek Town. A further period of extra time could not separate the two teams so the game went to penalties. Ards scored all six of their penalty kicks, before goalkeeper, and captain, Bailey Pyper impressively saved Leek Town's sixth penalty to send Ards to the final.
Ards faced Eaton Socon from Wales in the final. The Welsh team scored an early goal, and Ards gave everything in the remainder of the match but just couldn't find an equaliser. The Ards players were very disappointed at the end, but they can hold their heads high. The players gave everything that they had, and were a credit to the club.
Congratulations to everyone in the squad, and in particular Curtis who was voted player of the category.
